Author of 13 books, he won the 1969 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for *House Made of Dawn*, considered the first novel of the Native American Renaissance. His accolades include the 2007 National Medal of Arts and the 2018 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement.
