Update on the Global Agrifood Implications of the 2026 Conflict in the Middle East - The Work We Do
April 13, 2026

The Strait of Hormuz has been closed since February 28, halting vessel traffic and creating an emerging supply gap. This critical waterway previously handled 30-35% of global crude oil, 20% of natural gas, and up to 30% of internationally traded fertilizers.

While existing stocks currently prevent immediate food price hikes, continued closure will lead to higher energy, fertilizer, and commodity prices by late 2026/2027. Farmers face increased input costs, requiring urgent support, especially for low-income, import-dependent nations. This global disruption, exacerbated by potential export restrictions, demands timely diplomatic and policy interventions to avert a global food crisis.
