Communities in Guyana's Rupununi Region are actively protecting endangered river turtles and restoring nesting beaches. Through the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme and partners, over 18,000 eggs have been safeguarded, supporting local rangers and conservation efforts across 131 beaches.

The SWM Programme is an international initiative co-funded by the European Union, the French Facility for Global Environment, and the French Development Agency. It is implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), CIRAD, CIFOR-ICRAF, and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
